The story of this rug

A handwoven wool kilim, 108 × 147 cm (3'7" × 4'10"), drawn with Turkmen and Afghan motifs across a ground that changes color band by band. Kilim means flatwoven: there is no pile at all, the pattern is the structure, and the same figure appears on both faces.

01How it feels underfoot

Wool over cotton, made in Afghanistan. Because a flatweave has nothing to hide behind, every color change is a place where two wefts meet, and on this piece the joins are what give the surface its slight ripple. The palette runs warm through the middle and cools at the ends.

02Up close to the pattern

Turkmen drawing tends to repeat a single motif at different scales rather than build toward a medallion, and that is what happens here — the same hooked figure, large in the center panel, small along the edges. Wool wefts on cotton warps, beaten down by hand.

03At the loom in in Afghanistan

Weight is the honest difference between this and a knotted rug: a kilim of this size rolls up under one arm, which is why kilims traveled and pile rugs did not. The trade-off is that a flatweave will travel across a polished floor unless something grips it from below. Professional washing keeps the colors from bleeding into one another. The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
