Authentic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads colorful.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Wool flatweave from Akören, just short of four meters
Three meters and ninety-three centimeters long: 158 × 393 cm (5'2" × 12'11"), which makes this a room-length kilim rather than a rug. Handwoven in wool in Akören, a district southwest of Konya, multicolored, flat-woven, and there is exactly one of it. Length like this is the reason old Anatolian flatweaves are so often found folded. They were made for houses laid out along a long room, where a kilim ran the length of the floor and people sat at its edges, and modern rooms are shaped the other way.
Finding a place for it is the real question, and the honest answer is that it suits a long hall, a wide landing or a big open kitchen better than it suits a sitting room. Nothing else about it is difficult: wool front and back, no pile, light enough for one person to fold and carry. The pattern was counted rather than copied off a sheet, so the figures drift a little from one end of a piece this long to the other, and the color steps wherever a dye lot gave out and a new one took over.
Both are properties of hand weaving at length, and on a four-meter kilim they are unavoidable. Flat weaving has no pile to hide a stain and no thickness to absorb one, so whatever goes on it reaches the floor within seconds. Handwoven in wool at Akören, in the Konya region. 158 × 393 cm (5'2" × 12'11") — long enough for a hall, a landing or an open kitchen. Kilim flatweave: no pile, and the pattern legible on both faces. Multicolored, counted from memory, so the drawing shifts along its length. The color steps at every change of dye lot. Light for its size; one person can fold it. Nothing absorbs a spill on a flatweave. Cleaning is specialist work, and worth doing rarely.
One piece, woven to a room rather than to a size chart. Rooms this shape have mostly stopped being built, which is the only real argument against it.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
