Navy Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Taşpınar Rug Pillow

Two lengths of this were made and only the longer is left: 52 × 120 cm (1'8" × 3'11"), against the 54 × 108 cm (1'9" × 3'7") that has gone. The face is Taşpınar village weaving in navy wool, hand-knotted in Aksaray, made up as a cushion cover.

01The tone of the ground

The house holds it with its rare pieces. Taşpınar's palette is darker than most of central Anatolia's, and navy is the tone it is known for. Against it the weaver has set cream, a rust and a green, all of them at the small scale a village drawing uses — stepped hooks, a row of combs, a running border no wider than three fingers.

02From ground to pile

On a piece 52 cm across, that border takes up a quarter of the surface, and it is the part you will end up looking at. Wool throughout the face. What a rug-faced pillow gives you that a woven fabric one does not is structure: it holds an edge, keeps its rectangle, and sits upright on a bench instead of folding. What it costs you is give.

03Choosing the size

At 120 cm long it needs a wide seat or a bed head to look right, and on a standard armchair it will overhang at both ends. Professional cleaning, the same as the rug it came from.
