Cream Plain Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Twenty-seven millimeters of pile and 3,800 grams to the square meter: this is a plain cream rug hand-knotted in India, thick enough that the knots stand up as visible nubs across the surface.

01The Wool on the surface

The blend is 60% wool, 20% cotton and 20% polyester. Two sizes are made: 170 × 240 cm, which is 5'7" by 7'10", and 200 × 300 cm. There is no pattern on it at all. What you get instead is relief — the knot heads sit proud of the ground in close rows, so the light catches the tops and leaves shadow between them, and cream becomes a texture rather than a color.

02When you touch it

Underfoot it is deep and yielding, closer to a shaggy rug than to a flat one, and the surface reads as rough to the eye while feeling soft to the hand. In a Scandinavian room of pale wood and white walls it supplies the only weight in the space; in a bohemian one it holds down a floor otherwise covered in smaller things. Every knot on it was tied by hand.

03From ground to pile

Wool does the work at the surface, cotton and polyester run through the body to keep it flexible and stop the whole thing sagging under its own weight. One honest warning before you buy: a pile this thick collects lint and dust down between the knots. If you are the sort of household that notices such things, buy something shallower. It can be professionally washed, which is the only cleaning it should ever get.
