On the surface: Silk. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Traditional pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads navy, blue.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Nine by nine knots, and silk even in the warp
Nothing in it is anything but silk — not the pile, not the warp under it, not the weft between. Navy Hand-Knotted Pure Silk Hereke Rug, 129 × 219 cm (4'3" × 7'2"), tied at a 9 × 9 knot density in Hereke, the town east of İstanbul whose imperial workshop opened in 1843 to supply the Ottoman court.
One piece. Knot density is what a silk Hereke is bought for, and 9 × 9 is fine enough that the drawing can curve instead of stepping. At that count a stem bends, a leaf tapers, and a small ornament inside a border is drawn rather than suggested — none of which a coarser rug can manage at all.
Navy is the Hereke ground, and silk is why it does not simply read as dark: the fiber returns light along its length, so the field lifts to a blue and falls back toward black as you cross the room. The whole rug is silk, with no cotton anywhere in the structure, and that cuts in both directions.
It is the softest thing anybody weaves to walk on and also the most delicate floor covering made, so it belongs in a room that is looked at more than it is crossed. Sun takes the color out of silk faster than it takes it out of wool. Washing goes only to somebody who has washed silk before. Hand-knotted in Hereke, Türkiye, at a 9 × 9 knot density. Silk throughout, with no cotton anywhere in the structure. Navy that reads blue from one side of a room and almost black from the other. 129 × 219 cm (4'3" × 7'2") — an entrance, a study, or a bedroom. Fine enough for curved drawing: stems bend rather than stepping. Delicate under traffic; a formal room suits it better than a family one. Not a rug for a sun path. Cleaning by a silk specialist.
One piece. What does a 9 × 9 knot density mean? It counts the knots a weaver puts into a given square of surface, nine each way. The higher the count, the more knots occupy the same area, and the further a drawn line can curve instead of stepping. It is the main thing separating one Hereke from another. Why is Hereke associated with silk rugs? Hereke lies east of İstanbul on the Gulf of İzmit, and its imperial workshop opened in 1843 to supply rugs and silk textiles to the Ottoman court.
The town has been the reference point for the finest Turkish knotting ever since, and its name now travels a good deal further than its looms do. It will spend most of its life being looked at rather than walked on, and at this knot count that is the correct use of it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
