On the surface: Silk. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Traditional pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is blue, turquoise.
This rug is woven in China. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Turquoise under cream and gold, Oushak drawn eight by eight
Pure silk, nothing else, knotted eight by eight — sixty-four knots to the square centimeter. This is a hand-knotted Oushak-pattern rug of 108 × 159 cm (3'7" × 5'3") in blue and turquoise with cream and gold, woven in China, where silk has been worked since the road that carried it was first traveled. Blue does the ground, and it is the blue of water rather than of ink.
Turquoise comes in at the lighter values while cream and gold draw the Oushak motifs across the top. Silk takes dye more deeply than wool and returns light instead of absorbing it, so a blue like this reads saturated from one side of the room and almost white where the pile lies the other way.
Turn the rug and the whole color changes with it. Sixty-four knots in a square centimeter is what lets classical Oushak drawing keep its curves at this scale; at a lower count the same motifs would have to be squared off.
The fiber is silk throughout, surface and structure alike, which is now unusual — the number of rugs knotted from pure silk falls every year, and that scarcity is a fact about the market rather than a reason to hurry.
It is thin, light and delicate: low-suction vacuuming, no direct sun, professional washing only. What does an 8 × 8 knot density mean? It counts eight knots across and eight down in every square centimeter, or sixty-four knots per square centimeter.
The higher the count, the smaller each knot, and the finer the curve a weaver can draw — which is why fine floral patterns need a high density to work at all. Can this rug be hung on a wall? Yes.
At 108 × 159 cm it is light enough to hang, and pure silk rugs are often displayed rather than walked on, because the pile is delicate and the color changes with the viewing angle. A sleeve sewn to the back carries the weight more evenly than clips do. Hand-knotted in China from pure silk, surface and structure alike. 8 × 8 knot density — sixty-four knots to the square centimeter. Classical Oushak motifs in cream and gold over blue and turquoise. Silk returns light rather than absorbing it, so the color changes as you move around it. 108 × 159 cm (3'7" × 5'3") — a bedroom, a coffee corner, a small entrance, or a wall. Rugs knotted entirely in silk are made in smaller numbers each year. Low-suction vacuuming, no direct sunlight, professional washing only. It was made to be looked at as much as walked on, and either way it will outlast the room it goes into.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
