02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool rug

Wool ages over the years by settling into its place rather than by losing its shine. Used, it softens rather than hardens.

02

Authentic pattern

Authentic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is red.

03

Türkiye weave

This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Red Hand-Knotted Wool Selendi Prayer Rug — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

One end carries the mihrab niche and the other does not, so everything between them is drawn to be read from a single direction — which is what seccade means, and why the shape is always nearer a door than a square.

01After the color

This one is knotted in red wool on cotton at Selendi, in Manisa province, western Türkiye, at 113 × 167 cm (3'8" × 5'6"). Red fills the niche and the field around it, deep enough that the drawing inside has to be worked in cream and dark blue to be seen at all.

02From the hand of the weaver

Above the arch sit the small filler motifs that Anatolian weavers put there almost without exception — a lamp form, a comb, sometimes a pair of ewers — and the spandrels at the shoulders are filled with a different figure again, so the top third of the rug carries more incident than the rest of it. Wool pile on cotton warps, knotted by hand in a village rather than a workshop, and old enough that the house holds it among its rare pieces.

03Which furniture, which room

The directional composition is the practical catch: laid as a floor rug it only looks right from one end of the room, and a sofa placed across the niche will make it look wrong from every seat.

04The rule of care

Cleaning is professional work. Can a prayer rug be used as an ordinary floor rug? Yes, and many are. The only thing to plan for is the direction: a seccade composition has a top and a bottom, so it reads correctly from one end of a room and upside down from the other. Orient it toward the seating rather than across it. What is the niche at one end of the rug? It is a mihrab, the arched form that marks the direction of prayer in a mosque wall, reproduced in miniature on the rug.

05The mark of slow weaving

On a village prayer rug the arch is drawn in steps rather than as a curve, because a knotted pile builds shapes out of squares. Hand-knotted at Selendi, Manisa province, western Türkiye. Pile of wool, carried on cotton warps. Red ground with a stepped mihrab niche, drawn in cream and dark blue. Filler motifs above the arch and figured spandrels at the shoulders. 113 × 167 cm (3'8" × 5'6") — the standard single prayer size. Directional: it reads from one end of the room only. Professional cleaning. An older village weaving, one of one. Plenty of these end up on a wall rather than a floor, where nobody has to walk on the niche and the drawing gets read the way it was set out.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
