Black Damask Handwoven Wool Rug

On a black field the pattern behaves like watermarked cloth — plain from one angle, almost gone from another. Purple is the reason it works.

01After the color

Against black, a warm color would separate and look applied, whereas purple sits in the same tonal register and only declares itself where light falls. Bamboo viscose carries the sheen and wool carries the body, and the difference between those two fibers is what makes the drawing legible at all on a ground this dark.

02From the hand of the weaver

Walk around it and the damask arrives and recedes. The hand weaving happens in India, on a cotton foundation. A dark rug asks for a different kind of attention than a pale one: it hides marks and shows dust, which is the reverse of what most people expect, so it wants vacuuming more often rather than less.

03The Wool on the surface
