Black Anatolian Handwoven Wool Cicim Kilim Runner

Ninety-six centimeters wide and two and a half meters long — 96 × 250 cm (3'2" × 8'2") — this is a corridor proportion, and nothing about it was accidental. A handwoven wool cicim kilim on a black ground, made in Türkiye, chest-stored, with the pattern raised above the weave in supplementary yarn. A runner is read in motion and never all at once, and that changes what a weaver puts on it: repeats rather than a center, and a rhythm you meet a section at a time as you walk the length.

01Up close to the pattern

On a black ground the raised motifs pick up light from whichever end the window is on, so the same run of pattern looks brighter walking one way than the other. Wool throughout, handwoven in Türkiye, worked in cicim — an added weft that travels only where the pattern goes, which is why the reverse of the piece reads differently from the front. It is a chest piece, unused, and it has the stiffness that goes with that.
