Tribal pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cicim from Antalya: the wool figures stand above the ground
It looks embroidered and it is not. This is cicim, a flatweave in which a second decorative weft is threaded in while the ground is still being built, so the figures end up standing on the surface instead of lying in it.
Handwoven in wool in Antalya, multicolored, 163 × 300 cm (5'4" × 9'10"). One piece. The difference shows when you turn the piece over. Ordinary kilim is made by the ground weft alone and is the same on both faces, whereas a cicim's supplementary threads are laid in from the front, so the back shows the structure while the front shows the ornament — readable from either side, but not identical. The raised figures also catch light along their edges and cast a small shadow, which is why the same dyes look stronger in cicim than they do in a plain flatweave. Antalya sits on the Mediterranean coast at the southern end of the Anatolian weaving belt.
The house records this as an older weaving and holds it among its rare pieces, which says something about supply and nothing about quality: cicim at this size arrives one at a time. Two practical points — the raised threads are the part that wears first, so a cicim belongs where feet pass rather than where a chair leg pivots, and a flatweave has nothing in it to soak up a spill. Handwoven in wool in Antalya, on the Mediterranean coast of Türkiye. Cicim: a supplementary weft laid in during weaving, so the figures sit raised. Ornament on the front, structure on the back — legible from both, but not the same. Multicolored, in Anatolian drawing. 163 × 300 cm (5'4" × 9'10") for a long sitting room, a hall, or a wide kitchen floor. An older weaving, and one of the house's rare pieces. Raised threads wear first; keep chair legs off them. Have it washed by somebody who washes kilims. Cicim was what a household did when it had time and dyed wool to spare, and there is no industrial version of that.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
