Modern pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads white.
This rug is made in India. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
White turning cream under a bulb, 90 × 150 or 200 × 310 cm
It looks like a chalk drawing on a whitewashed wall — gray geometry on an almost-white ground, nothing filled in. White Geometric Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, knotted in India from wool worked together with cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose, made small at 90 × 150 cm and large at 200 × 310 cm. White floors behave differently at different hours, and this one is worth watching for a day. Daylight makes it brighter and colder than a sample suggests; a low lamp turns the ground toward cream and the gray toward warm slate.
The geometry is drawn in outline rather than as solid blocks, which is why a very pale rug does not read as a blank — there is enough line on it to hold the eye and not enough to compete with anything. Wool takes the wear and the cellulose yarns take the touch, and together they give a rug soft to sit on and stiff enough to keep its shape at three meters.
Everything on it is knotted by hand. The obvious warning applies, and applies twice at 200 × 310 cm: white is white, and a rug this pale in a room with a dog, a toddler or an open kitchen goes to the washers on a shorter cycle than a dark rug does.
That washing is a workshop job. Hand-knotted in India; wool with cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose. Gray geometry drawn in outline on a near-white ground. Cooler and brighter in daylight; cream and slate under a lamp. 90 × 150 cm (2'11" × 4'11") and 200 × 310 cm (6'7" × 10'2"), one of each in stock. Soft to sit on, firm enough to hold its shape at the larger size. A pale rug in a busy room will need washing more often. Professional washing. Rugs this light are usually bought for small rooms; the large one is the more interesting decision.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
