Brown Geometric Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

The wool carries the Woolmark stamp, which is a third-party certification rather than a claim the house makes about itself. A brown and cream hand-knotted rug from India, 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"): wool, cotton and bamboo viscose tied by hand into a low, tightly packed field with a geometric drawing across it. The palette runs to two colors and no more, cream drawn over brown, and the geometry is left plain enough that the fibers do the work instead.

01What Wool does

Bamboo viscose is where the shine comes from: it is spun from cellulose and throws light back along the fiber, so the cream flares when the sun crosses it and goes quiet in the evening, while the brown wool stays matt at every hour.

Two fibers behaving differently under the same light is the whole design decision here. Knotted by hand in India, with cotton doing the structural work below and the pile packed tight enough that it stands short and does not shed.

03What the yarn is

Wool takes the wear, bamboo viscose takes the shine, cotton takes the strain underneath — three fibers, three jobs. It was made in two sizes and the smaller one has gone, so the 200 × 300 cm is what remains. Everyday marks can be wiped off; a real clean needs a professional, and bamboo viscose in particular does not enjoy being scrubbed at home. Hand-knotted in India, 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10").
