Cream Geometric Loom-Woven Wool-Blend Rug

The cream of this rug sits between ivory and a very pale gray, so it behaves in a room more the way morning light does than the way white paint does. It is loom-woven in India, its yarns cotton, wool and bamboo viscose together, with quiet geometric forms spread over an otherwise plain field. Two sizes are woven: 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10") along with 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"). The geometry is spaced rather than tightly repeated, and it is drawn a shade away from the ground instead of in a contrasting color, so from the door the rug reads as a single pale surface and only resolves into a pattern once somebody is standing on it.

01Where it is laid

That restraint is what makes it a bedroom rug: it gives the floor something to be without giving the eye anything to do at six in the morning. On pale oak it nearly disappears. On a dark wood floor it turns into the brightest surface present. Loom-woven means a mechanical loom lays down the structure and a person finishes the piece by hand — the middle construction, more even than machine work and far quicker than knotting.

02From ground to pile

Cotton gives the foundation its strength, wool gives the surface its warmth, and the bamboo viscose is what makes the cream look soft instead of chalky. It is woven in limited numbers for Halıcızade. Cream is still cream, though: in a hallway or beneath a dining table it will record whatever happens on it, and we would put this one in a bedroom. Loom-woven in India: mechanical structure, hand finishing. Cotton, wool and bamboo viscose worked together, the bamboo viscose giving the surface its softness.
