On the surface: Wool, Bamboo, Cotton. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads white, cream.
This rug is made in India. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Vanilla ground, curved squares opening outward, 389 cm long
Curved squares, opening one out of the next from the middle of the rug toward its edges: that drawing is the whole of this cream geometric loom-woven runner, 76 × 389 cm (2'6" × 12'9"), worked in India, where cotton, wool and bamboo viscose are spun into one rug.
Loom-woven means a frame carries the structure and the ends are closed by hand. Because the squares bend, walking the length of the rug changes what they look like — from one end they read as a flat grid, from the other as something with depth in it. Nearly four meters is enough distance for that to actually happen rather than to be a claim about it.
The cream sits between vanilla and ivory and never goes white; under a hall light it picks up a low shine from the bamboo viscose in the yarn, and in daylight it goes matt again. It neither dominates a corridor nor disappears from one. Three fibers do three jobs. Wool gives the pile its body, cotton holds the structure, and bamboo viscose — the house name for viscose spun from bamboo cellulose — supplies the sheen.
The pile is set at the usual domestic thickness, so it takes a step without feeling thin, and the surface reads as handwork to the hand even though a loom laid it down. It is a piece for someone who wants a corridor floor with a little character and no pattern to argue with.
Professional washing; the viscose does not want home shampoo. Made on a loom in India, and finished off the loom by hand. Wool, cotton and bamboo viscose, spun together in the same rug. Curved square motifs radiating from the center, which shift as you walk them. A cream that moves between vanilla and ivory, matt by day and lightly lit at night. 76 × 389 cm (2'6" × 12'9") — long enough for a real corridor. Standard domestic pile thickness, firm underfoot. Professional washing; no home shampoo on the viscose. One piece at this length. Nearly thirteen feet is a commitment to a corridor, and in ten years this will still read as a decision rather than a default.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
