The surface uses Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a beige, cream ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
No silk here — beige field, flowers held in a brown border
Beige Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Harem Series — a beige field left almost plain, closed by a dark brown border carrying fine floral compositions, made in Türkiye from Erzurum wool, 169 × 236 cm (5'7" × 7'9"). There is one of it. The whole design is the contrast between those two zones.
Beige in the middle, dark brown at the edge, and the flowers concentrated where the brown is, so the piece reads like a framed picture from the doorway and like a plain floor from the sofa. Color transitions inside the border are soft rather than stepped, which keeps the drawing fine at close range. The Oushak inheritance is in the motif shapes.
The restraint in the middle is not, and that is the modern part of it. Its yarn is Erzurum wool, spun before the fleece has ever been scoured, so the natural grease is still in the fiber and the brightness with it. There is no silk in this one; the pile is wool alone, and the surface is correspondingly matt.
It is knotted in the Anatolian double technique, where each tie is made twice, so the weaving takes twice as long and the pile sits twice as firm. Çınar Halı, which weaves for the series, is the maker. Wool takes vacuuming without complaint, and a professional washer should do the rest. Hand-knotted at Çınar Halı in Türkiye, Harem series. Unscoured Erzurum fleece, bright and soft, spun before the grease came out of it. Wool pile with no silk in it; the surface stays matt. Near-plain beige field inside a dark brown border of fine flowers. Anatolian double knot, which doubles the weaving time. 169 × 236 cm (5'7" × 7'9") — a seating group, or a bedroom with the bed on it. Regular vacuuming; professional washing for a deep clean. One rug, and only the one. Plain middles are what make patterned edges legible, and this one will still be readable when the furniture standing on it has changed twice.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
