The surface uses Wool, Viscose, Cotton. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is cream, white.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Anatolian stars and octagons over cream, in New Zealand wool
It is woven in the Uşak region of western Türkiye, by women, on looms: Cream Anatolian Loom-Woven Wool Rug from the Heritage series, in New Zealand wool, with Anatolian stars and octagons drawn in red, blue and green on a cream ground, measuring 200 × 300 cm — 6'7" by 9'10".
A loom sets the ground and hands finish it, which is what loom-woven means here. The composition is bordered several times over, and each band carries a different set of figures: eight-pointed stars, hooked octagons, the small filler motifs Anatolian weavers use to close a gap. The eye travels from the outside inward and keeps finding a new register on the way.
Color concentrates in the middle. At three meters long this is a full living-room size and the drawing has been scaled for it — nothing in the pattern is so small that it vanishes under a sofa. New Zealand wool is the fiber, chosen for a long staple that resists matting, and the pile is cut low, which is what keeps so many small motifs legible instead of blurred.
Loom weaving is the middle construction: more regular than a machine-made rug, faster than one knotted knot by knot. Uşak has been weaving since the fifteenth century and the finishing is still women's work there. A shallow pile gives less underfoot than a deep one, which suits some people and not others.
Send it out to be washed. Loom-woven in the Uşak region of Türkiye, finished by hand. New Zealand wool, long-stapled and cut to a low pile. Anatolian stars and octagons in red, blue and green on cream. Several concentric borders, each carrying a different set of figures. Three meters by two — 200 × 300 cm, or 6'7" by 9'10". Firm underfoot rather than deep and soft. Washed by a professional. The motifs on it were drawn for tents and for village floors, and they still make more sense on a floor than on a wall.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
