Authentic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is yellow.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Elli yaşında bir Sivas dokuması, yarım metre eninde
Half a century old and half a meter wide. This is a small Sivas village rug, knotted by hand in wool above a cotton foundation, 49 × 100 cm (1'7" × 3'3"), with Anatolian figures worked over a yellow ground. It has been owned before.
There is one of it. Yellow is unusual as a ground color in Anatolian weaving, where red and navy do most of the work, and it changes what the drawing does — dark figures on yellow read at a distance the way dark figures on red never quite do.
The composition is a full one squeezed into a small frame, with the border taking a large share of the width, which is what happens when a weaver keeps a normal pattern and reduces the loom. Wool above and cotton below, made in Türkiye, and the house dates it at about fifty years. That falls inside what dealers call semi-antique, a band running from fifty years to a hundred, and the word is a convention with no certifying body behind it.
Fifty years of use is visible: the yellow has opened where light fell on it, the pile is lower along the middle, and one end has been combed more than the other. A piece this size is used the way a mat is used, or hung, and it should be cleaned by a specialist. Hand-knotted in the Sivas region of central-eastern Türkiye. Wool pile with cotton beneath it. Yellow ground — uncommon in Anatolian weaving — with dark figures over it. Dated by the house at fifty years or so. 49 × 100 cm (1'7" × 3'3") — a doorway mat, a bedside, or a wall. Sold as pre-owned; the yellow has opened where the light reached it. Nobody issues certificates for antique, semi-antique or vintage. Cleaning through a rug specialist. Small rugs survive because nobody ever puts a sofa on them, and this one has fifty years of proof.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
