02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool rug

Wool ages over the years by settling into its place rather than by losing its shine. Used, it softens rather than hardens.

02

Classic pattern

Classic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is navy blue, blue.

03

Türkiye weave

This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Navy Hereke-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Second-Hand Pair — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

This one was woven as half of a pair, and its twin is still here — order two and the set arrives together. A second-hand hand-knotted Hereke-pattern rug in navy wool on a cotton foundation, 198 × 297 cm (6'6" × 9'9"), made in Türkiye and coming out of Atatürk University in Erzurum. The town of Hereke stands where the Gulf of İzmit narrows, an hour or so east of İstanbul, and an imperial workshop was set up there in 1843 to weave for the Ottoman court; the name has meant fine, densely knotted work in classical drawing ever since, and it is applied to the pattern family as often as to the place.

01Knot by knot, by hand

What that means on the floor is a formal composition — a field held inside a border, worked in the framed arrangement the classical repertoire uses — carried on a navy that goes almost black away from a window and opens up under a lamp. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.

02What the yarn is

Cotton in the warp and weft is what lets a rug this size hold its shape through decades of being walked on. Buy it knowing what it is: this rug has had a working life already, and it carries whatever that leaves in a pile.

03The mark of slow weaving

Have it washed by someone who handles hand-knotted rugs before it goes down. There are two, and when the two are gone this exact pair does not recur. Hand-knotted in Türkiye, wool pile on a cotton foundation. Second-hand, from Atatürk University in Erzurum. Hereke drawing: a classical framed field, navy ground, formal in arrangement. 198 × 297 cm (6'6" × 9'9") each. Woven as a pair — selecting two quantities buys the set. A used rug: expect the wear a public building gives a floor. Wash it professionally before it is laid. Why are there two of this rug? It was woven as one of a matched pair, and both halves are still together.

04Coming off the loom

Selecting a quantity of two buys the set rather than two unrelated pieces, which is the reason to take both at once: separated, a matched pair is very hard to reassemble later. What does Hereke mean on a rug? Hereke lies on the Gulf of İzmit, where an imperial workshop was established in 1843 to supply the Ottoman palace. The name now covers both that origin and a family of finely knotted classical drawings, so it can describe where a rug was made or what is on it. A pair of matching rugs is a thing institutions bought and households almost never do, and two of these down a long room is an effect that cannot be assembled from singles.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?
