On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern, Tribal pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is black.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Siirt mohair, black and patternless, with a nap left long
The fiber is the whole story here. Tiftik is mohair, the fleece of the Angora goat, and Siirt in southeastern Türkiye has woven it for generations into a long-napped black cloth that is more blanket than rug.
This is one, pre-owned, handwoven, 133 × 185 cm (4'4" × 6'1"), with no pattern on it whatsoever. Mohair does not behave like sheep's wool. The fiber is smoother, stronger and considerably more reflective, so a black woven from it is never a dead black — it carries a faint sheen that shifts as the nap moves, and in low light the surface looks closer to charcoal than to ink. The nap on a Siirt weaving is left long and unclipped, which is what gives it the animal quality that people either want immediately or not at all. Handwoven in Türkiye.
The house is straightforward about its history: this piece is second-hand, and it comes with the softness of something that has already been used and washed. Two things to know before buying.
A long dark nap shows every pale hair, thread and crumb that lands on it, so it is a poor choice for a household with a light-colored cat. And the high proportion of animal fiber means we would not recommend it to anyone with a known sensitivity to that kind of dust.
Cleaning is a professional matter. Handwoven in Siirt, southeastern Türkiye, from wool and tiftik — mohair. Long, unclipped nap; flat-woven with no knotted pile beneath it. Black, with the low sheen mohair gives rather than a flat matt black. 133 × 185 cm (4'4" × 6'1") — beside a bed, over a divan, across a chair back. Pre-owned, and already softened by use. Pale hair and lint show plainly against the dark nap. We would not put it in a house where someone reacts to animal fiber dust. Professional cleaning; a long nap is combed out rather than brushed. People put a hand on it without having decided to, which no other weaving in this catalog manages.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
