Red in two values, a prayer rug woven in Tencel® and cotton

Authentic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is red.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Red in two values, a prayer rug woven in Tencel® and cotton
Red is the color a prayer rug has usually been, from Anatolian village work to the Ottoman court, and this one keeps it: a seccade woven on the loom in Türkiye in Tencel® and cotton, sized for one person, drawn in the authentic register rather than a modern one. Tencel® is lyocell — cellulose from wood pulp, spun into a smooth filament — and on a red ground it does what a matt fiber cannot: the color holds two values at once, deeper where the pile falls away from you and brighter where it leans back toward you.
A single flat red never looks like a single flat red, and a piece used several times a day never looks the same twice. The construction is loom-woven, meaning the ground is built mechanically and the ends are closed by hand. That is the practical choice for something rolled up and carried about, because a loom-set foundation keeps its rectangle instead of going out of square.
No wool anywhere in it. It wants a professional clean, not a home one, and should be rolled rather than folded so the pile takes no crease. Woven on a loom in Türkiye — Tencel® and cotton, built mechanically and hand-finished. Red, in an authentic prayer-rug drawing. Tencel® is lyocell, made from wood pulp under licence from Lenzing. The red carries two values, according to which way the pile is lying. Contains no wool. Roll it rather than folding it, so the pile keeps no crease. Professional washing. This is the small rug that gets used more often than any large one in the house, and it was built for exactly that.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
