On the surface: Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is red.
Woven in 6 sizes, from 80 × 140 cm to 250 × 340 cm. Measuring the empty floor and choosing the nearest size always gives a better result than buying small.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Named for the Roman wine god, fringed down its long sides
Liber was the Roman god of wine, and the kilim that carries his name was drawn in a wine cellar: a handwoven wool kilim in reds and black, flat-woven on a loom in Türkiye, its geometry built from shapes that each stand for a single grape. Every piece in the run is different from the next. The design works only in red.
Grape skins are not one color and never were, so the studio held to a single hue and let its tones do the separating — deep, dried, bruised, bright — with black carrying the outlines between them. Read singly the shapes are grapes; read together they close into one field.
The one structural joke is at the ends: the fringes are on the long edges rather than the short ones, where a kilim has put them for as long as anyone has been weaving them, because the design is about possibility rather than about where a thing is supposed to stop. It is flat-woven, which means there is no pile at all — warp and weft only, wool throughout, worked on a loom by women weaving in their own villages across Türkiye.
A kilim is thinner and firmer underfoot than a knotted rug and it will slide on a bare floor without a pad beneath it. One more thing worth saying plainly: because each is woven singly, the piece that arrives will not match the photograph knot for knot, and that is the point of buying one. Flat-woven by hand on a loom in Türkiye, entirely in wool. Designed by Studio Potato and named for Liber, the Roman god of wine. Reds throughout, with black drawing the shapes apart. Every geometric form on it stands for one grape. Fringes run along the long edges, not the short ones. Woven by women in villages across the country, one piece at a time. It will differ from the photograph; no two are alike. Professional cleaning, and nothing improvised at home. Flat weaves get thinner and better with walking, and this one has the color to survive the process.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
