01After the color

The ground is blue the way shallow water is blue, which is to say it keeps turning turquoise. The medallions are not stacked around one center. They sit at intervals across the field like flowers on the surface of a pool, so the eye travels outward toward the frame rather than inward to a single point.

02Up close to the pattern

Cream is what makes that legible: the pale motifs lift off the blue, and the thin floral running through the border softens the coolness of the field before it reaches the edge. Turquoise changes its mind with the light — bright and slightly green at midday, several shades deeper by lamp. Viscose comes from cellulose, and cellulose handles light much the way silk handles it, which is why this rug looks costlier than its fiber.
