01How many centimeters, which room

The Turkish gives no dimension for this piece, so neither does this page. The composition is built in layers, the way a wall is built in layers when it has been rendered, weathered and rendered again, and the dark and pale passages run into one another rather than meeting on a line. Look twice and the shapes have moved.

02What the yarn is

Bamboo viscose catches light even in the darkest parts of the drawing, which is what gives the surface its depth — it is the only reason a flat gray field has any distance in it at all. Interior architects reach for compositions like this because the color relationships are held together tightly enough to sit under almost anything. Cotton takes the warp; wool and bamboo viscose are knotted over it, and the bamboo viscose is held back for the pattern rather than spread across the whole surface.

03The mark of slow weaving

What separates this series from most hand weaving is the density of the knotting, and it is what you feel first when you take a corner of it in your hand. Few workshops in Türkiye or anywhere else are set up to make it. The washing has to go to someone who knows the fiber, or the color and the hand of the pile will not survive it. Handwoven in India by weavers working the Maison Series for this house. Cotton warp, with wool and bamboo viscose knotted over it. Bamboo viscose kept for the motifs, where it puts light into the darkest passages. Anthracite and beige dissolving into each other in layers, with no repeat. Knotted at a density well above the usual for its class; the weight in the hand shows it. Suits a salon, a dining floor, an entrance or the front of a bed. Produced in a small number of workshops, here and abroad. Only a washer used to hand-knotted work should take it on. It is the rug that people photograph without meaning to, because there is always some part of it they have not looked at yet.
