Authentic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a red ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Karapınar deseni, baştan sona yün: nadir parçalardan
Karapınar is a district on the southern edge of the Konya plain, and its weaving is known for red grounds and a hard, dry wool. This is a hand-knotted Karapınar rug in that tradition: wool surface, wool foundation, 138 × 205 cm (4'6" × 6'9"), red-dominant, listed by the house under rare pieces.
It is not new work. Wool over wool is the older construction and the less common one now. A cotton foundation gives a flatter, more regular back and is cheaper to build, which is why nearly everything made today uses one; wool over wool gives a rug that flexes, lies a little unevenly, and wears down slowly.
The Konya plain is high, dry sheep country, and the fleece off it is coarse and lustrous rather than soft — the reason a Karapınar piece feels firm underfoot rather than plush. Village work of this kind carries no signature and no weave number, so all the evidence is in the rug itself: the knotting, the wool, and the way the red has moved across the field. Expect abrash, the tonal drift you get when one dye lot runs out mid-rug and the next is a shade off, and read it as the record of the weaving rather than as a fault.
A rug of this age should be cleaned by somebody who washes rugs for a living and by nobody else. Hand-knotted in the Karapınar district of Konya, central Anatolia. Wool pile over a wool foundation, which is the older village construction. Red-dominant field in the authentic Anatolian drawing. 138 × 205 cm (4'6" × 6'9") — an entrance hall, a study, or a wide landing. Older work, and part of the house's rare-pieces holding. Abrash across the ground is expected and is part of how the piece is read. Specialist washing only. One rug.
There is no second. It has already outlasted the room it was woven for, and it will outlast this one.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
