02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Jute surface

On the surface: Jute. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.

02

Modern pattern

Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is colorful.

03

India weave

This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.

Technical details

Multicolor Spiral Handwoven Rush Rug, Bolga Series — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

Along the Ganges in India there is a natural fiber the region calls the Golden Fibre, and the Bolga Series is woven from it. Multicolor Spiral Handwoven Rush Rug, 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), is a flatweave of coiled discs in earth beige, warm orange, red, mustard and deep green, made entirely by hand. The discs are the whole design. Each is a spiral coiled flat and bound in place, and they sit beside and over one another like braided rosettes laid on a floor, so the surface has depth with no pile at all.

01A question of size

Every coil turns in its own direction and no two are quite the same size, because they are made one at a time. The color is set into the fiber rather than laid over it, and the natural straw tone showing between the coils is what keeps five strong colors from arguing with each other. This is a flatweave, not a knotted rug, and it behaves differently.

02To make it last

It absorbs very little, which makes day-to-day cleaning simple, and it cannot be washed — water is what destroys a rush fiber. It also dislikes point loads: wheelchair casters and heels will break the coils, and the house prefers to say that before the sale rather than after it.

03Where it is laid

Keep it to entryways, conservatories, kitchens and the sort of room people arrive in rather than settle in, and it will hold its shape for years. Brush it, and keep it dry. Handwoven in India from natural rush fiber, along the Ganges. A flatweave of coiled discs — no pile, and depth built from the coils themselves. Earth beige, warm orange, red, mustard and deep green over natural straw tone. Very low absorbency, so day-to-day cleaning is easy. Not washable.

04Choosing the size

Water is what ruins this fiber. Heels and wheelchair casters will break the coils. 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"); a 120 × 180 cm size is also made. An honest alternative for anyone shopping sisal and rush. Can this rug be washed? No.

05How it feels underfoot

Rush fiber loses its structure when it is soaked, so a Bolga rug is brushed and kept dry rather than washed. Its low absorbency means most spills sit on the surface long enough to be lifted off with a dry cloth. What is the Golden Fibre? It is the name given along the Ganges to the natural rush fiber this rug is made from.

06What it sits well with

It is harvested locally, worked while it is still pliable, and coiled and bound by hand into the discs that make up the surface. Where does a rug like this belong? Entryways, conservatories and kitchens, where it is walked across rather than lived on. It stands up to traffic and to dirt, and it does not stand up to concentrated weight from heels or caster wheels. Anyone who has looked at sisal and wanted something with color in it has been looking for this.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.
