Tribal, Traditional pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is green.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Green where an Oushak is usually madder red
Like a piece of classical drawing photographed and then printed one size too large: Green Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Şahzade Series, 149 × 203 cm (4'11" × 6'8"), knotted by hand in Afghanistan, wool on a structure that is largely cotton.
Oushak drawing is scaled up rather than crowded, and on a rug this size that means very few motifs, each of them big. Green under an Oushak pattern is a modern decision. The historical grounds are madder red and ivory, and moving the same stems and flowerheads onto green changes what they do — the drawing stops reading as ceremony and starts reading as line. There is no crowding at this scale, so the eye can follow one stem the whole way across instead of losing it inside a repeat.
It is the choice for a room that already carries pattern in its curtains. The house is direct about the construction, and it is worth repeating: the pile is wool and only wool, the structure below it is cotton for the most part, and a little recycled synthetic thread goes in with the cotton to hold the tension. Nothing here is called all-natural, because it is not.
The knot is symmetrical and doubled, wrapping two warps at a time, slower to work and firmer once it is in. Vacuum it; leave the washing to a specialist. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan on the symmetrical double knot. Wool pile; a mostly cotton structure carrying a little recycled synthetic thread. Green ground carrying large-scale Oushak stems and flowerheads. 149 × 203 cm (4'11" × 6'8") — a bedroom, a study, or a generous entrance. Few motifs, drawn large, so the pattern reads from across a room. Suits a room that already has pattern elsewhere in it. Vacuuming for maintenance, specialist washing for anything more. A single piece. Oushak drawing has survived four hundred years of being redrawn, and being put on green is a mild thing to have happened to it.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
