Black Abstract Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

The forms on it are soft-edged, nearer to something poured than to something drawn. A black hand-knotted rug from India, 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), with bamboo viscose worked in among the wool and a cotton foundation beneath, and an abstract field in black and cream and nothing in it that repeats. Halıcızade's own advice on this one is to work against it rather than with it: pair the rounded shapes with furniture that has hard lines and flat color, black or white, and leave the pattern in the room to the rug alone.

01The origin of the pattern

Put a patterned sofa beside it and both lose. The cream comes forward and the black recedes under lamplight; in daylight the relationship reverses and the cream is the quieter of the two. Hand-knotted in India, wool and bamboo viscose in the pile on a cotton foundation underneath.

02What the yarn is

Bamboo viscose is the fiber the house uses where a surface needs to shine without silk in it, and in a piece this dark it is what keeps the black from reading as a hole in the floor. The pile is medium and even. Marks can be wiped off; a deep clean is a professional's job, and the viscose content is the reason to leave it to one.
