Powder Pink Striped Loom-Woven Wool Rug

Think of a still pond with one stone dropped into it: curved lines repeating outward at even intervals, raised slightly above the ground so you can feel them underfoot. A loom-woven rug in powder pink, 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"), made in India from wool with cotton and bamboo viscose. The pink is not fixed. In full daylight it is a pale powder tone; as the light drops it moves toward rose, and by lamplight it is nearly dusty. Nothing was printed onto the rug to make that happen.

01How it feels underfoot

Bamboo viscose is a cellulose fiber, and cellulose reflects roughly the way silk reflects, so one dye reads as several depending on the angle. The stripes are curved rather than straight and the relief between them is shallow, which keeps a large rug from looking like a large stripe. Loom-woven puts the structure down mechanically and leaves a person to complete it; it stands between the machine-made rug and the knotted one, and the house is direct about which of the three this is.

The pile is at ordinary rug thickness, so it goes under a door without trimming. One caution about the viscose: it shows a footmark until the pile is brushed back, and it does not take a home shampoo.

02The Wool on the surface

Vacuum on suction; professional cleaning when it needs it. Loom-woven in India — structure on the loom, finishing by hand. Cotton, bamboo viscose and wool in the surface. Curved stripes raised in low relief across the field. Powder pink by day, rose by lamplight — the viscose does that, not a dye trick. 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"), a full living-room size. Viscose takes footmarks; brush the pile back to clear them. Professional cleaning; no home shampoo. Just the one. Pink of this weight stops registering as a color after a week and starts registering as light, which is why it survives in rooms that reject brighter ones.
