The story of this rug

At 205 × 310 cm (6'9" × 10'2") this is a rug that takes the whole seating group rather than sitting in front of it. Cream and Burgundy Floral Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Sultanahmet Series — flowers set at even intervals in burgundy and green over a cream ground, hand-tied in India, with wool and cotton in the body and viscose reserved for the pattern. 01Up close to the pattern

Flowers repeat at regular intervals across the field instead of massing toward a center, and over six and a half square meters the effect is calm rather than busy: a large rug with a small-scale drawing on it reads as texture from standing height.

02Color, by the light

Burgundy and green are held in balance so that neither claims the field, and the curved stems, the narrow inner frames and the motifs interlocking at the corners give the classical style its plainer face.

03What the yarn is

Viscose in the motifs catches light and gives the flowers a shallow depth as you cross the room. Wool and cotton together make the foundation and the body of the pile; the viscose is confined to the pattern.

04The mark of slow weaving

All of it was tied by hand in India. A rug this size will spend its life under furniture, and the wool content is what lets it recover from a sofa leg rather than keeping the dent. Under a large dining table it does the other job well, since the low pile lets chairs slide instead of catching.

No home washing — a rug cleaner, and not often. Wool and cotton with viscose in the pattern; hand-tied in India. Cream ground with evenly spaced burgundy and green flowers. Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
