Copper Plain Loom-Woven Wool Rug

Copper is neither brown nor orange, and that is the whole point of this rug: a plain loom-woven floor in 100% New Zealand wool, dug out of the middle of the two, 13 mm deep and 4,750 g/m² heavy, made in India in several sizes.

01After the color

No pattern anywhere on it. The color is dense and refined rather than bright — the tone of the metal after it has been handled, not after it has been polished. Because the fiber is wool and wool is matt, nothing on the surface glares, and the copper stays the same copper from every corner of the room. It is at its best against natural timber, against leather, and against the gray of stone; put it near any of those and the room settles.

02From the hand of the weaver

Plain and deep-toned at once, which is a combination that gets noticed without asking to be. Loom-woven in India, which here means the body of the rug is set mechanically and the knotting closed by hand.

03The Wool on the surface

The fleece is New Zealand wool, and its matt surface is the reason a copper floor throws no glare. Step onto it and the density registers before the color does. Two things to know: wool of this depth sheds a little, particularly early on, and the fiber will hold a stain if one is left in it.

05The mark of slow weaving

The rug's body is built on a loom that carries part of the work, and the knotting and finishing are completed by hand. It gives a denser, more regular surface than a machine-made rug, and takes far fewer hours than one knotted throughout. Why does a new wool rug shed? Short fibers left in the pile from spinning work their way loose during the first months of use.

06How it feels underfoot

That is shedding, and it is normal in a deep wool pile. It slows down steadily with regular vacuuming and stops once the loose fiber has cleared; it is not a sign of wear. Copper is the color people describe wrongly and recognize instantly, which is why it is worth seeing on a floor rather than a screen.
