01Which furniture, which room

From one side of a room the surface is bright and almost wet-looking; from the other it goes matt and quiet. Everything standing on it is more sharply defined against a field with nothing in it, which is the whole use of a plain rug in a crowded room, and barefoot it is unexpectedly soft for something this dense. In India the loom work and the hand knotting are carried out on the same piece, which is what loom-woven means here.

There is one thing to settle before it arrives. A surface with this much shine records where people have walked, and the marks stay until somebody runs a brush the other way across the pile; anyone who would find that irritating should choose something matt.

02The mark of slow weaving

It sheds and raises very little, so a vacuum keeps it, and a deep clean goes out, because viscose and household water are a poor combination. Loom-woven in India, hand knotting and machine work on the same piece. 100% viscose. 4,500 g/m² — dense, with the weight in the hand to prove it. 12 mm pile: thick and filled, still low enough to open a door over. No pattern at all; the shift between bright and matt is the design. It records footmarks — brush the pile back to clear them. Low shedding, easy to vacuum, professional washing for a deep clean. Twelve millimeters at this weight is thick without being deep, which is the narrow band where a plain rug is both comfortable and practical.
