Cream Minimal-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, 140 × 200 cm (4'7" × 6'7"), came off a loom in India — a cream ground somewhere between beige and ivory, scattered with small geometric marks in reddish brown. The drawing is sparse on purpose.

01The origin of the pattern

Little geometric figures are set at intervals across an otherwise open ground, close enough to a traditional Anatolian repeat to be read as a reference and far enough from it to look current.

02The tone of the ground

Cream at this weight is not a fixed color: in daylight the ground goes toward ivory, under a lamp it settles into beige, and the reddish brown of the marks warms up along with it. The rug does not insist on itself.

03The mark of slow weaving

It holds a room together from underneath and gets noticed second. On a loom-woven rug the frame carries the structure and a weaver finishes the ends. Cotton and wool are worked together here, at the pile height you would expect of an ordinary rug rather than a flatweave, so there is weight underfoot and a soft surface above it. Halıcızade is straightforward about what this is not: it sits between machine work and knotting, more regular than the first and faster than the second.

04After the color
