On the surface: Wool, Silk, Cotton. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is black.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Black ground, Versace drawing, silk worked through the wool
Vietnam is where this one was knotted, on a commission that appears in no other collection: Olive and Black Versace-Pattern Hand-Knotted Silk and Wool Rug, 250 × 300 cm (8'2" × 9'10"), a black ground carrying the pattern in olive green and gold, wool and pure silk in the pile over a cotton foundation.
A single piece. Three meters across is where a rug stops being furniture in a room and becomes the plan of it. In a salon with a high ceiling, or a reception area where people arrive before they sit down, the black field lowers the floor and the silk raises the pattern off it. Walnut, mahogany and lacquered classical furniture is what it was drawn against; so are gilt and bronze mirror frames, marble side tables, brass or crystal fittings, and velvet-upholstered armchairs.
Under a long dining table it collects the table and its chairs into one object. In a wide entrance hall, with a console, a tall mirror and wall lights, it is the first thing anyone registers. The surface is wool with pure silk laid into the drawing, and cotton beneath carries the structure, which is what stops an edge this long from lifting.
Weave density is high, and a pattern carrying this much detail cannot be done any other way. In a stone house or a villa built on classical lines the motifs settle into the architecture rather than argue with it; against plain modern walls they are the argument. Washing is specialist work and should not be attempted at home. Knotted by hand in Vietnam, on a design made for Halıcızade only. Wool with pure silk in the pile; cotton foundation. Olive green and gold Versace motifs over a black ground. 250 × 300 cm (8'2" × 9'10"): reception rooms, high-ceilinged salons, wide entrance halls. High weave density, which a pattern this detailed requires. Sits with walnut, mahogany, marble, brass and velvet. Professional washing; never at home. A rug this size will be relaid in three different rooms before it is finished, and it was made solid enough to survive all three.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
