Cream Floral Handwoven Silk Rug with Geometric Border, Nahar Series

Thin branches and small flowers spread over a cream ground the way a garden looks at seven in the morning, before the color has come up in it. This is a handwoven Nahar Series rug, roughly nine-tenths silk and one-tenth wool, made in China across several months, with a geometric border closing the composition. The design has gone out of production. Nothing in the field announces itself. The branches are drawn thin and the flowers small, in pastel tones a single step away from the ground they sit on, and from the doorway the whole rug reads as one pale surface.

Walk onto it and the drawing resolves. The border follows the opposite instinct — geometric, firm, traditional in shape — putting a hard edge around a soft field and stopping the composition from drifting.

01What the yarn is

The motifs themselves belong to the Anatolian and Central Asian flower repertoire. Silk makes up about ninety percent of the yarn and wool about ten. The wool is not filler: a pile of pure silk at this fineness collapses under weight, and the wool is what lets it recover.

02The mark of slow weaving

Weaving took months in a Chinese workshop, and that workshop no longer produces the design, so what is in circulation is what there is. It is fine, low in pile, and better suited to a quiet room than a busy one.

03Reading the motif

For anything beyond dust, use a rug washer. Roughly 90% silk and 10% wool, woven by hand in China. Months of work; the design is no longer produced.
