      A flatweave rug has no pile. The pattern is made by interlocking the weft directly through the warp, so the rug is thin, light and finished on both faces. In Türkiye the family is called kilim, and it includes cicim and sumak.

      There are more than 200 flatweaves in this range, woven in wool and cotton, in sizes from 80×150 cm doormats to 300×400 cm room pieces.

      Kilim, Cicim, Sumak — What the Names Mean

      • Kilim — the plain slit-weave. Colour blocks meet along a vertical slit, which is what gives kilims their sharp diamonds and hooks. Most of the pieces in our kilim rugs are this.
      • Cicim — extra weft threads laid on top of the ground weave, so the motif sits slightly proud of the surface.
      • Sumak — the weft is wrapped around the warp rather than passed straight through. Denser, heavier, and flat on the front with loose ends behind.

      All three are woven without a single knot. That is the whole difference from a hand-knotted rug, and it changes everything else.

      Where a Flatweave Earns Its Place

      • Over another rug. A kilim layered on a plain wool or sisal base is the commonest way they are used now.
      • Under a dining table. Chairs slide instead of catching, and crumbs come out with a shake.
      • Kitchens and entryways. Thin enough to sit under a door, quick to lift and clean.
      • On the wall. Light enough to hang, and the pattern reads cleanly from across a room.
      • Summer rooms. No pile means no heat held underfoot.

      Handwoven and Power-Loomed

      Most of the flatweaves here are woven by hand on village looms across Anatolia. A smaller group is power-loomed in Malatya, in eastern Türkiye, and finished by hand — the same flat construction at a lower price. Each rug page says which it is; we do not blur the two. If you want pile rather than flatweave, our power-loomed rugs are woven in Kütahya and Uşak.

      Care

      Vacuum either side, without a beater bar. Shake smaller pieces out rather than vacuuming them. Blot spills at once. Wool flatweaves take moisture more readily than a dense pile rug, so dry them flat and out of direct sun. Professional cleaning once a year is plenty.

      Shipping and Returns Outside Türkiye

      Taxes, shipping and customs duties are calculated and collected at checkout, in full, before the rug ships. There is no payment on delivery. Return shipping is the buyer's cost, and the 14-day right of return applies to international orders as it does at home.

      What is a flatweave rug?

      A rug woven without knots or pile. The weft is interlocked directly through the warp, producing a thin, reversible fabric. Kilim, cicim and sumak are all flatweaves.

      Is a kilim the same as a flatweave rug?

      A kilim is a flatweave. Flatweave is the construction; kilim is the Turkish name for it, and the name most people search for.

      Are flatweave rugs durable?

      Wool flatweaves take heavy use well and there is no pile to crush or shed. They wear differently from a knotted rug — thinner underfoot, and the surface abrades rather than matting.

      Can a flatweave rug go under a dining table?

      It is the best place for one. Chairs move freely over a flat surface and there is no pile to trap food.

      Can I use a flatweave rug outdoors?

      On a covered balcony or porch, yes. In direct sun and rain the natural dyes fade and the wool holds damp, so bring it in.

      Which side is the front?

      Either. A true flatweave is finished on both faces. Sumak is the exception — its loose weft ends sit on the back.

      Where are these rugs made?
