Tribal pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a colorful ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Joined wool panels in two small sizes, handwoven in Türkiye
The Anadolu Şal patchwork rug is handwoven in wool in Türkiye, and it arrives here in two small formats rather than one: 81 × 120 cm (2'8" × 3'11") and 118 × 186 cm (3'10" × 6'1"). Multicolored throughout, ethnic in drawing, and each of them assembled from panels that came off different weavings. Small is a harder shape for a patchwork than large, because a big rug can absorb a panel that does not quite belong and a small one cannot.
What holds these together is the wool itself — the same fleece and the same weight of yarn running through every panel, so the color changes while the surface does not. The smaller of the two is an entrance mat by size, laid where the color has to work in a doorway lit by one bulb.
The larger takes a chair and a side table, or sits at the foot of a bed with the panels running across rather than along. Both were woven by hand, and both were then cut and joined, which is a second craft on top of the first and is done with the rug face down and under tension. The Turkish trade calls this etnik work, and the appeal of it is precisely that nobody planned the final combination — the panels were chosen from what existed.
That also means the limitation: you are buying an arrangement, and the arrangement will not be repeated. A patchwork should be lifted rather than dragged, since the strain goes straight to the joins.
Take it to a rug washer, not a dry cleaner. Handwoven in wool in Türkiye, then cut and joined panel by panel. 81 × 120 cm (2'8" × 3'11") and 118 × 186 cm (3'10" × 6'1"), one piece in each. Multicolored, ethnic in drawing, with the color changing panel to panel. One weight of wool yarn throughout, which is what makes a mixed field cohere. The smaller size suits an entrance; the larger takes a chair or a bed end. Lift it to move it — dragging pulls on the joins. Cleaning by a rug washer rather than a dry cleaner. Nobody drew these two; they were assembled, and that is why neither of them will turn up in a neighbor's hallway.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
