This one is a hand-knotted rug in orange, 249 × 308 cm (8'2" × 10'1"), with no pattern to speak of — wool and bamboo viscose knotted at high density so that the color itself is what moves across the surface.

01After the color

Made in India, one piece. The orange is not a single orange. It runs from full terracotta through pale brick to something close to pomegranate flower, and because the shift happens gradually rather than in blocks, the field behaves like a wash instead of a pattern.

02What Viscose does

Bamboo viscose is what makes that visible: light travels down the fiber and comes back out at an angle, so the same square of rug is warmer from one side of a room and cooler from the other. Beside minimal furniture it holds the floor by color alone.

03Knot by knot, by hand

In a room with art on the walls it is the second loudest thing, deliberately. Knotted by hand, and the knot count is the point — a tight, dense pile that gives the rug its weight when you lift a corner and its resistance underfoot.

04What the yarn is

Wool carries the body; bamboo viscose carries the shine. Aren is woven in small numbers, so the color grading of one piece is never the grading of the next. Ordinary upkeep is a vacuum and a wipe, and anything beyond that belongs to a professional washer. Hand-knotted in India for the Aren series. In a pile it carries light down the length of each strand, which is what produces the shift between warm and cool as you move around the rug. Here it is knotted alongside wool, which supplies the body and the resilience. A plain rug in a strong color is harder to live with than a patterned one, and this is the color to try it in.
