The story of this rug

249 × 289 cm (8'2" × 9'6") is very nearly a square, a proportion hardly anyone weaves and the only one that answers a square room. Gray Handwoven Wool Rug with Vintage Pattern, Retro Series — a faded classical drawing on gray, wool over cotton, made by hand in Pakistan. One of one. Most rooms are rectangles and most rugs are drawn for them, so a squarish floor usually ends up with an oblong rug in it and forty centimeters of bare board at one end.

This is the piece that solves that. Under a square dining table, or in a room that turns a corner, the proportions stop being noticeable at all, which is the highest compliment a rug's shape can be paid.

01How it feels underfoot

The drawing gets the treatment the whole Retro series gives drawing: motifs out of the old repertoire, contrast pulled down, ground moved to a neutral. Tied by hand in Pakistan, in wool over a cotton foundation, with a trace of recycled synthetic yarn worked into the skeleton for strength.

Seven square meters in this proportion is heavier and more awkward to handle than a long rug of the same area — a near-square has no obvious direction to roll in, and it takes two people to lay it straight.

Gray also conceals less than a patterned red does; dark hair and pale dust both show on it. Washing goes to a professional rather than to anything improvised at home. Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
