Cream Carved Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Rug, Safir Series

The unusual thing here is that the pattern was cut as well as tied. A cream handwoven rug from the Safir series measuring 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"), its Oushak ornament carved by hand with shears once the weaving was finished, so every outline stands slightly proud of the ground.

01The mark of slow weaving

Woven in India at high knot density. Carving is what gives a flat drawing a shadow. A weaver goes over the finished pile and cuts down the ground around each motif by a few millimeters, so the ornament keeps its own height and the light stops at its edge.

02After the color

On a cream rug this matters more than on a dark one, because cream has no contrast to spare — the relief supplies the definition that color would otherwise have to. The Oushak motifs underneath are the classical ones, handled with a lighter hand than an antique would use. It is knotted densely, which is the precondition for carving at all: a loose pile collapses under the shears and the line goes ragged.

03What Wool does

Wool carries the ground and bamboo viscose runs through the ornament, which is why the cut edges catch more light than the field does. Carved rugs need a little care in use — a vacuum with a beater bar drags at the raised outlines, so use suction alone.

04At the loom in in India

Have it washed by a specialist, who will know to brush the pile back into its relief afterward. Handwoven in India for Halıcızade. The Oushak pattern is carved by hand with shears after weaving. 05The origin of the pattern

The ornament keeps its full height, the ground drops away, and the outline gains a shadow. Does the carving wear away with use? Not from ordinary walking, because the cut goes into the ground rather than into the motif.

06To make it last

What damages it is a vacuum with a rotating beater bar, which drags at the raised edges. Suction alone is safe, and a specialist wash restores the relief. Photographs flatten it and showrooms rarely light it properly. The carving is a thing you find with a hand rather than an eye.
