Tribal pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is colorful, red.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Altay kurganlarındaki 2500 yıllık halının deseni
Şahzade Series, woven by hand in Afghanistan. The drawing descends from the Pazyryk, the oldest knotted pile rug that survives anywhere, lifted out of a frozen Scythian tomb in the Altai and kept now at the Hermitage.
Multicolor, wool in the pile over a cotton foundation carrying a small quantity of synthetic thread. Two sizes: 127 × 181 cm (4'2" × 5'11") and 127 × 187 cm (4'2" × 6'2"). What this drawing takes from Pazyryk is the discipline of the borders rather than the animals: concentric frames, each one narrower than the last, closing on a field of repeated motifs.
Worked in full color, those frames are what hold the piece together — a multicolor field of this kind scatters without them. From a distance the borders are the structure; stand on it and the individual motifs separate out. This is Afghan work, woven by hand inside a tradition centuries deep.
The foundation is cotton carrying a small quantity of synthetic thread, added for durability and stated rather than glossed over. Professional washing. Woven by hand in Afghanistan. It is the oldest knotted pile rug that survives, excavated from a Scythian tomb frozen into the permafrost of the Altai and dated to roughly the fifth century BC.
It is held at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, and its bordered, framed composition is what the Şahzade drawing borrows.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
