Navy Oushak-Pattern Loom-Woven Tencel® Rug, Zade Series

There is a small tree of life hidden in the border, and once you have found it you cannot stop finding it. This is a navy Zade rug with a classic Oushak drawing, Tencel® and cotton, woven on the looms at Kütahya, in four sizes topping out at 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"). Navy is a heavy color to put on a floor and the field softens it: fine flowers spread right across the ground, with red, beige and pale blue distributed evenly enough that no one of them takes over.

01Where the Border comes from

The border carries leaves and buds running end to end, and among them, at intervals, the Halıcızade tree — a mark rather than an ornament, and the sign that the rug was made for this house. Under changing light the navy shifts between a flat dark and something closer to ink, so the rug looks different at breakfast than it does at nine in the evening.

02Knot by knot, by hand

It goes best with gray, brown and red in the rest of the room. Kütahya is where it is made, on traditional looms, with machine power and hand labor working the same rug; the fringes are completed afterward, by hand, in the region.

03From ground to pile

The yarn is Tencel® and cotton — plant-based, soft, and with no wool in it — and the surface carries a matt-to-bright shift depending on which way the pile is running. The pile is low, which means less to settle into and a quick job with a vacuum. Loom-woven in Kütahya, Türkiye — machine and hand labor on the same loom. Tencel® and cotton yarns; contains no wool. Fine floral field in red, beige and pale blue over a navy ground. Leaf-and-bud border carrying the Halıcızade tree of life at intervals. Fringes knotted by hand in the region after weaving. Four sizes: 130 × 190, 170 × 240, 200 × 290 and 200 × 300 cm. Professional washing; the low pile makes a vacuum enough between times. Dark rugs are usually bought to hide a floor; this one is worth buying to look at.
