Beige Brushstroke Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zima Series

Strokes of milky brown and cream travel right to left over a beige ground, with gray surfacing between them where light might catch on moving water — a Zima series rug, loom-woven in Tencel® over cotton, its dimensions 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), produced on the Kütahya and Uşak looms. Rumi's couplet about water that keeps moving rather than settling or icing over stands behind everything in Zima, and the designers read it as a series of doorways.

This is the version where the movement runs sideways rather than out from a center. Nothing is centered, nothing is framed, and the strokes simply leave at the left edge. Calm without being still is a hard thing for a plain rug to manage, and this is the one in the series that manages it. Only two fibers are involved.

01What Silk does

Tencel® — Lenzing's lyocell, made from wood pulp — is the entire pile; cotton makes the foundation and is never seen. Lyocell takes light much as silk does, so a single stroke reads as milky brown at one end of the room and nearly gray at the other, and the tonal drift you see is the fiber rather than the dye.

02At the loom in in Uşak

These looms stand in western Türkiye and the weavers at them are women; the machine sets the structure and the hand closes the ends. No wool is used in it at any point. Tencel® throughout the pile, cotton in the foundation, wool-free. Milky brown and cream strokes crossing beige, with gray between them. Loom-woven in Kütahya and Uşak, machine structure and hand finish. Lyocell shifts tone with the angle of the light, which is the fiber and not the dye. Room size, at 200 × 300 cm. Each rug numbered, and marked with the house tree of life. Have it washed professionally; there is no domestic version of that job. It suits a floor where something ought to be happening without anything actually being announced.
