Bedroom Rugs

The last thing you see before going to sleep and the first thing you see when you open your eyes is the rug in your bedroom. Even though our eyes are mostly closed, this space is, in our opinion, the most important part of what shapes how we feel while sleeping. Also, since it’s the space least seen by others, it’s where you can fully express your own tastes—so what would you lay down there?

A bedroom rug is placed to catch the first step out of bed, which means it is sized from the bed rather than from the room: either one rug run under the lower two-thirds of the bed and past it on three sides, or a pair of runners laid along each side. This collection holds 733 rugs in both arrangements.

The bedroom is the one room where the rug is judged with bare feet before it is judged with eyes. That changes the order of the decision: fiber and pile height come first, size second, pattern last. The general method — how to measure, what to check before ordering — is in the bedroom rug guide. This page is about matching that method to what is in stock.

The two arrangements, with the numbers

There are two standard layouts and one variant, and the bed dimension decides between them.

        • One rug under the bed. Lay the rug across the room, sliding it under the bed from about a third of the way down so that the bedside tables stay on the bare floor. A 200 × 300 cm rug (6'7" × 9'10") under a 160 × 200 cm double leaves roughly 70 cm (2'4") of pile showing on each side and about 60 cm (2'0") past the foot — enough that both feet land on wool in the morning. Under a 180 cm king the same rug leaves 60 cm a side.
        • Everything on the rug. Bed, bedside tables and the walking strip all on the pile. This needs 240 × 340 cm (7'10" × 11'2") for a double and 300 × 400 cm (9'10" × 13'1") for a king, and it only makes sense in a room of 20 m² or more.
        • A pair of runners. Two rugs of 80 × 150 cm (2'7" × 4'11") along each side of the bed, sometimes with a third across the foot. It costs less than one large rug, it moves when the bed moves, and it leaves a handsome floor visible. It is also the arrangement most often seen in older Turkish houses.

The trade rule of thumb for a bedroom is that the rug should cover something between a quarter and a third of the floor area. Below that the rug looks stranded; above it the room starts to read as fitted carpet.

The most common bedroom size has its own page: 6 m² rugs covers 200 × 300 cm and its near neighbors. For the runner arrangement, see runners.

        Which fiber for bare feet?

Pile height decides the first impression; fiber decides how long that impression lasts.

Wool is the default and the safest: springy, slightly oily to the touch, warm within a second or two of standing on it, and dense enough to recover after a bed frame has pressed into it for a year. A long or shaggy pile gives the softest first contact and the most work to keep clean, since a vacuum has to reach through it. Tencel and viscose feel cool and fluid rather than warm, and both weaken when wet, so they belong away from the bathroom door. Cotton is light, washes more easily than the others, and flattens fastest.

Compare wool rugs and shaggy rugs; between them they cover most of what a bedroom floor is asked to do.

        Color, pattern and light

A bedroom is looked at in two lights that could not be less alike: full daylight, and whatever leaks around the curtains at six in the morning.

A pale cream or gray ground returns window light into the room and makes a small bedroom read larger; it also shows the track between the door and the bed sooner than a mid tone will. A dark ground does the reverse — the room reads darker at dawn, and dust shows more than dirt does. Between the two, mid-tone madder, mink and terra grounds are the ones that stay presentable longest.

On pattern, the useful distinction is density rather than style. A quiet, evenly repeating field — an unpatterned ground, a soft vintage wash, a wide-set medallion — sits still in a room meant for sleeping. A dense, high-contrast pattern is better placed where it will be looked at rather than woken up to.

What a bedroom rug actually does

Two things, both measurable at the floor. It puts a warm surface between a bare foot and a cold board or tile, which is the whole reason the arrangement is built around the side of the bed. And it damps footfall and cuts the echo that a sparsely furnished room throws back — a bedroom typically holds less soft furniture than a living room, so the difference is audible.

What it does not do is stay clean by itself. Vacuum in the direction of the pile, rotate the rug once a year so the worn strip beside the bed moves, and lift it to sweep beneath rather than pushing dust to the edges.

        Frequently asked questions

What size rug goes under a double bed?

A 200 × 300 cm rug is the standard choice. Laid across the room and pushed under the lower two-thirds of a 160 × 200 cm double, it leaves about 70 cm of pile on each side and 60 cm past the foot, so both feet land on the rug on getting up.

Should the bedside tables stand on the rug?

Only if the rug is large enough to carry them without crowding the walls, which means 240 × 340 cm for a double and 300 × 400 cm for a king. In smaller rooms, slide the rug under the bed from a third of the way down and leave the tables on the floor.

Are two runners better than one large bedroom rug?

They are the practical answer in a small room or where the floor itself is worth seeing. A pair of 80 × 150 cm runners along each side of the bed costs less than one large rug, can be moved when the bed moves, and can be taken out and shaken individually.

Which rug is softest underfoot for a bedroom?

A long-pile or shaggy wool rug gives the softest first contact. Dense short-pile wool feels firmer but recovers better under a bed frame and is easier to vacuum clean, so it is the longer-lasting choice in a room used every day.

What color rug suits a bedroom?

Pale cream and gray grounds return window light and make a small room read larger, while dark grounds keep a bright room dim at dawn. Mid-tone madder, mink and terra sit between the two and stay presentable longest in daily use.

Can a kilim be used in a bedroom?

Yes, with one trade-off. A flat-woven kilim is thin, reversible and cool rather than warm underfoot, so it suits warm months and layering over boards, but it does not give the cushioned first step that a wool pile does.

How much of the bedroom floor should the rug cover?

Between a quarter and a third of the floor area is the usual guide. Less than that and the rug looks stranded in the middle of the room; more and the effect approaches wall-to-wall flooring, which removes the outline the rug is there to draw.
