A plain color rug is a rug woven in a single color, with no figurative motif and no repeating pattern, so that the interest comes from fiber, pile height and surface texture instead. A plain rug is the least neutral choice in a room. What a plain rug is actually doing in a room
Holding the floor still while something else moves. A patterned rug competes with a sofa, a wall color and a bookcase; a solid field absorbs all three and hands the attention back to the furniture. That is why plain rugs turn up under carved wood, under strongly figured marble, and in rooms where the walls already carry art.
The reverse case is worth stating plainly. In a room of flat surfaces — white walls, a low sofa in a single fabric, pale boards — a solid rug adds nothing and the floor reads as unfinished. There the answer is a plain rug with relief in it: a carved or high-low pile, a shifting ground with a faint tonal drift, or a long shaggy pile that makes its own shadow.
How the color behaves under warm and cool light
Light changes a solid field far more than it changes a patterned one, because there is no second color to steady it.

- Gray and anthracite are the steadiest of the solids, because gray has no strong hue to shift. Which fiber for a plain rug?
The fiber decides the color more than the dye lot does, because each one reflects light differently.

Living with a solid field
Two habits do most of the work. Vacuum in the direction of the pile rather than against it, since a solid field shows brush marks that a pattern would swallow; and rotate the rug twice a year so that traffic and daylight fall on different parts of it. Blot a spill with a dry cloth first — rubbing drives the liquid down into the pile where it sets, and on a pale solid ground that mark stays visible. Use a pad under a light-colored rug on a dark floor, since a thin plain rug will otherwise telegraph the boards beneath it.
