Saruj Series

If nobility were a carpet, it would be Saruj. With its tightly knotted weave and patterns and colors that have endured for centuries, the Saruj collection, often favored by aristocracy, is one of our favorites.

The Saruj Series is Halıcızade's classic hand-knotted Oushak line: a wool pile in deep burgundy, cream, brown and red, tied with the double Gördes knot in experienced workshops in India and Afghanistan, and eight to ten months on the loom for a room-size piece.

Saruj joins Mahal and Harem as one of several Halıcızade series working in Oushak's historic pattern language, distinguished here by its deep burgundy-and-red palette and by the density of its knotting. Three classical drawing traditions run through it: Oushak, Mamluk and medallion.

Where the Saruj Series Is Woven

In India and Afghanistan, in workshops the house has worked with for years. Of the fourteen pieces currently listed, seven carry an India tag and seven an Afghanistan tag. Every one of them is recorded as hand-knotted, and every one lists wool in the pile.

Eight to Ten Months, and the Double Knot

Saruj is tied with the double knot — the symmetrical Gördes knot, looped around two warps rather than one — which is what holds a dense floral field in register and keeps the drawing crisp as the pile settles. A medium or large piece takes between eight and ten months on the loom. Two yarn combinations run through the series: wool from the Kirman region of Iran, valued for its luster and color depth, and, in the other group, Manchester cotton in the foundation in place of standard cotton. Both are built the same way — wool surface over a cotton skeleton.

Sizes on the Floor

The fourteen pieces run from 104 × 148 cm (3'5" × 4'10") to 278 × 372 cm (9'1" × 12'2"), with most of the room-size pieces landing between 180 × 270 cm and 200 × 300 cm. Because each rug is woven as a single piece to its own dimensions, the numbers on the listings are rarely round. Halıcızade Halı Kilim is in Çankaya, Ankara.

Styling a Saruj Series Rug

Saruj's deep burgundy and red tones suit traditional, formal rooms that can carry real visual weight.

  • Traditional and formal living rooms and offices suit Saruj's classic Oushak pattern and deep coloring particularly well.
  • Compare against our Mahal and Harem series, which share the same Oushak design lineage in lighter, cream-forward colorways.
  • Pairs naturally with wood furniture and rich, warm traditional upholstery.
  • A strong choice for buyers looking specifically for a densely tied, hand-knotted Oushak piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Saruj Series?

A hand-knotted Oushak-pattern line from Halıcızade, worked in wool in deep burgundy, cream, brown and red, tied with the double Gördes knot in workshops in India and Afghanistan.

How does Saruj relate to the Mahal Series?

Both draw on the same Oushak-inspired pattern lineage, but Saruj uses a deeper burgundy-and-red palette, while Mahal is lighter and cream-forward.

Is the Saruj Series part of the Halıcızade house brand?

Yes. Saruj is one of Halıcızade's own series, developed in house and woven to the house's specification by partner workshops rather than bought in finished.

Where is the Saruj Series produced?

In India and Afghanistan. Of the fourteen pieces currently listed, seven carry an India tag and seven an Afghanistan tag.

How long does a Saruj rug take to weave?

Eight to ten months for a medium or large piece. The series is hand-knotted with the double Gördes knot over a cotton foundation, and the density of the knotting is what the production time buys.

How should I care for a Saruj Series rug?

Standard wool care applies for most pieces, regular vacuuming, prompt spill treatment, and professional cleaning every 12-18 months; check the specific listing for exact fiber composition.
