02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool surface

On the surface: Wool, Cotton, Bamboo. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.

02

Traditional pattern layout

Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is white, cream.

03

India work

This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.

Cream Relief-Carved Floral Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Ahteran Series — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

05

The story of this rug

Every flower on this rug was outlined by hand with a pair of shears once the weaving was done, so the motifs stand proud of the ground instead of lying flat in it. That is the Ahteran series: Cream Relief-Carved Floral Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 235 × 322 cm (7'9" × 10'7"), knotted in India with its wool and bamboo viscose set on cotton, brown and pale green over cream.

01A line from the archive

One piece. Carving turns a two-dimensional pattern into shallow relief, and it changes what light does to a rug — instead of reflecting off a level pile, light catches the cut edge of each flower and throws a thin shadow beside it.

02How it feels underfoot

The classical Anatolian drawing here is worked in brown and light green on cream, and the center of the field is left comparatively open, which is deliberate: it is where a coffee table goes, and a table set down on carved motifs would flatten what the shears did. The pile is wool, the foundation cotton, and bamboo viscose is drawn through the flowers to give them the shine that makes a carved edge visible at all.

03From the hand of the weaver

High knot density and heavy hand labor built it. One consequence of the carving is worth knowing before you buy: the surface is not level, so a rolling desk chair will not run across it smoothly, and a wheeled trolley will catch on the raised drawing. Only experienced washers should handle it. Hand-knotted in India: cotton underneath, a wool pile above, bamboo viscose in the flowers. Motifs shaped in relief with shears once the rug was off the loom. Cream ground with the drawing in brown and light green. The field is open at the center, sized for a coffee table. High knot density and heavy hand labor. 235 × 322 cm (7'9" × 10'7") for a large sitting room. An uneven surface: wheels and rolling chairs do not cross it well. Washing by experienced hands only. What does relief carving mean on a rug? It means the pile is trimmed by hand around each motif once the rug leaves the loom, so the pattern sits a few millimeters above the ground.

04Choosing the size

The cut edge catches light and casts a small shadow, which is why a carved rug looks three-dimensional where a level one looks printed. Why is the middle of the field left open? Because something is going to stand there.

05The origin of the pattern

A coffee table set down on carved motifs presses them flat and undoes the shaping, so the design leaves the center comparatively plain and concentrates the flower work where the floor stays clear. The carving is the part that dates a rug: in fifty years a flattened relief tells you exactly where the furniture stood.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.
