Classic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is cream.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pastel flowers at the edges, each one cut free with shears
Bamboo viscose over a wool and cotton base gives this Ahteran Series rug its silky finish: 182 × 267 cm (6'0" × 8'9"), handwoven in India, a wide quiet cream center with pastel flowers gathered along the edges, and every motif carved in relief with shears after the weaving was finished. One piece. The carving is the part worth putting a hand on.
Once the rug came off the loom, a worker cut around each motif with shears, one at a time, dropping the ground away so the flowers stand above it. You feel the step before you see it. The pattern itself draws on both Oushak and Hereke sources — the open field of the one, the finer flower work of the other — and the pastels keep it from reading as a period piece. The construction is wool and cotton in the body with bamboo viscose in the motifs, and the knots are set tightly enough to give the shear work something to cut into.
A wide plain center is a decision with a consequence: a coffee table will sit on nothing but cream, and the flowers around the edge are what will show past the furniture. Washing is recommended only by experts, and given the carved surface that recommendation is worth taking literally. Handwoven in India: a wool and cotton body, bamboo viscose through the motifs. Motifs carved in relief with shears after weaving, one at a time. Pattern drawn from both Oushak and Hereke traditions. Pastel flowers concentrated at the edges around a wide plain cream center. 182 × 267 cm (6'0" × 8'9") — a mid-size to large room. A high knot count is what gives the shear work something to cut into. Expert washing only. One piece. Furniture placed in the middle of it will cover the plainest part, which is either good planning or a waste, depending on how the room is arranged.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
