On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a cream ground.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Earth and coffee squares on cream, Gördes knot throughout
Naturally dyed yarn is where this rug begins: every thread in the Mahal Series geometric rug in cream was colored with natural dyes, which is why its squares arrive in soft steps of earth and coffee rather than in flat blocks.
Handwoven in Pakistan, wool surface on a cotton foundation. A single piece. The field is a rhythm of squares over a cream ground — light enough to keep a room open, ordered enough to make a room look tidier than it is.
Inside that order the tones drift. One square is a shade browner than the one beside it, the next lighter again, and the drift is the whole difference between a woven floor and a printed one. Cream reads warm here rather than cold, because the browns beside it are earth colors rather than gray ones. It was knotted in Pakistan by weavers keeping the Anatolian double-knot tradition in daily use — the symmetrical Gördes knot, the same one the 13th-century Seljuk rugs from the Alâeddin Mosque in Konya were tied with.
Wool covers the entire walking surface; cotton runs beneath as the skeleton, and a very small synthetic content is added for durability. The body is neither thick nor thin, and the surface is firm, which makes it quick to clean and slow to lose its shape.
It goes into modern rooms and rustic ones equally — the pattern is geometric, the palette is not. Only a professional should wash it. Woven by hand in Pakistan, Anatolian double knot throughout. Every yarn dyed with natural colorants, giving soft tonal steps between squares. Repeating square geometry on a cream ground, in earth and coffee tones. Wool surface, cotton skeleton, a trace of synthetic yarn for durability. Firm mid-weight body that keeps its rectangle. Reads equally well in a modern or a rustic room. Professional washing. One piece. Cream is the hardest ground to weave well and the easiest to live with, and rug makers have never much liked that arrangement.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
