The surface uses Wool, Silk, Cotton. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a red ground.
This rug is woven in India. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Wool, silk and cotton in one red, knotted in India
The ground stays one color and every layer of the pattern is built on top of it: a red classic Versace-pattern hand-knotted rug made for Halıcızade in wool and pure silk over a cotton foundation, measuring 250 × 300 cm (8'2" × 9'10"). One only. Because there is no second color in the field, the motifs have to earn their legibility from texture, and that is what the silk is for. Where daylight comes through a wide window the silk passages fire and the wool ones stay matt, so the classical forms appear to sit above the red rather than in it.
Cross to the other side of the room and the effect reverses. Nothing about the drawing has changed; only the light has. Wool and pure silk share the surface and cotton runs beneath as the frame, and that is what holds a rug of this width flat over decades.
The knot count is high, and it has to be for a pattern with this much fine line in it to be tied at all. Under a large dining table the red separates the eating end of a room from the rest of it, and in a hall with paintings and older furniture it finishes a floor without arguing.
Specialist washing, nothing else. Hand-knotted at a high knot count in wool and pure silk, over a cotton foundation. A single-color red ground, with the classical motifs built up on top of it. Silk passages catch daylight while the wool stays matt, so the pattern lifts and falls. Produced for Halıcızade and not part of any other collection. 250 × 300 cm (8'2" × 9'10") — under a long dining table, or across a large reception room. The pattern is emphatic and will not sit quietly in a small room. Specialist washing, and nothing else. The pattern is famous enough that the rug has to be good, and the knot count is where that argument gets settled.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
