A 7 square meter rug measures 200 × 350 cm (6'7" × 11'6") in its machine-woven standard, covering exactly 7.00 m². Hand-knotted pieces sold under the same name are shorter and much wider — 227 × 323 cm, 237 × 326 cm, 242 × 324 cm. The two shapes suit different rooms, and the width is what decides which.
This is the least standardized size in the range, and the one where the label tells you least. What follows is what actually lands in the band, why a long rug and a wide rug of identical area behave differently on a floor, and the clearance to measure before putting one under a dining table.
The band runs from roughly 6.9 to 7.9 m², and it contains two distinct shapes.
| Size (cm) | Feet and inches | Actual area | Proportion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 × 350 | 6'7" × 11'6" | 7.00 m² | 1 : 1.75 — long |
| 206 × 363 | 6'9" × 11'11" | 7.48 m² | 1 : 1.76 — long |
| 219 × 317 | 7'2" × 10'5" | 6.94 m² | 1 : 1.45 |
| 227 × 323 | 7'5" × 10'7" | 7.33 m² | 1 : 1.42 |
| 237 × 326 | 7'9" × 10'8" | 7.73 m² | 1 : 1.38 — wide |
| 242 × 324 | 7'11" × 10'8" | 7.84 m² | 1 : 1.34 — wide |
| 250 × 300 | 8'2" × 9'10" | 7.50 m² | 1 : 1.20 — wide |
| 236 × 294 | 7'9" × 9'8" | 6.94 m² | 1 : 1.25 — wide |
The long pieces come off a power loom set to a round figure. The wide ones are hand-knotted and loom-woven work, where the width of the loom fixes one dimension and the weaver's months at it fix the other. Both are seven square meters; neither can do the other's job. The rug size guide sets out why handwoven dimensions land where they do.
Width carries furniture. Length carries a room.
A 200 × 350 cm rug is 200 cm across, exactly the width of a 6 square meter piece, and it does the same job at each side: front legs on, back legs off. What it adds is 50 to 60 cm of length. That is worth having in a room that runs long rather than square — a through-room with a sofa at one end and a table at the other, a wide corridor of a living room, a king bed laid lengthwise with the rug running out past the foot.
A 237 × 326 cm rug is nearly 40 cm wider. That width is what lets a whole seating group stand on it instead of leaning on its edge, and it is what carries a dining table with the chairs pulled out. In a square room of 22 to 28 m², the wide piece will look settled where the long one looks like a landing strip.
Measure the room before you choose. If one dimension is more than about one and a half times the other, take the long rug and run it with the room. If the room is close to square, take the wide one.
Seven square meters is the first size people put under a dining table, and it is the size at which the arithmetic most often fails.
The rule is that a chair pushed back must keep its rear legs on the rug. Pulling a chair out to stand up takes 46 to 61 cm (18 to 24"), so the rug needs 50 to 60 cm of clear pile beyond every edge of the table top. Work it from the table, not the room.
| Table top | Minimum rug | 200 × 350 cm | 237 × 326 cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 × 160 cm, six seats | 190 × 260 cm | Works — 55 cm at the sides, 95 cm at the ends | Works comfortably |
| 90 × 180 cm, eight seats | 190 × 280 cm | Tight — 55 cm at the sides | Works — 73 cm at the sides |
| 100 × 200 cm, eight seats | 200 × 300 cm | Fails at the sides — 50 cm exactly, with nothing spare | Works — 68 cm at the sides |
| 100 × 240 cm, ten seats | 200 × 340 cm | Fails | Fails on length |
Two things follow. A standard 200 cm width is marginal for any table wider than 90 cm, which is why so many dining rugs look wrong from the chair rather than from the door. And a table of ten wants 10 square meters whichever shape you start from. Measure your own top and add 50 to 60 cm on every edge before you look at anything.
Seven is the size to take when six is short and eight is too wide for the floor.
| 6 square meters | 7 square meters | 8 square meters | 9 square meters | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard size | 200 × 290 · 200 × 300 | 200 × 350 | 240 × 340 | 250 × 350 |
| Feet and inches | 6'7" × 9'6" | 6'7" × 11'6" | 7'10" × 11'2" | 8'2" × 11'6" |
| Width | 200 cm | 200 cm, or 230 – 250 cm handwoven | 240 cm | 250 cm |
| Room | 18 – 24 m² | 22 – 28 m², long rather than square | 25 – 32 m² | 25 – 32 m², square |
| Seating | Front legs on | Front legs on, over a longer run | All legs on | All legs on |
| Dining | Six to eight, table up to 90 cm wide | Eight, if the rug is 230 cm or wider | Eight, wide or extending | Eight to ten |
Compare 6 square meter rugs, 8 square meter rugs and 9 square meter rugs before deciding.
The wide pieces in this band are almost all hand-knotted or loom-woven: wool pile on a cotton warp, tied row by row, months of work for one rug. That is where the odd dimensions come from and it is also why no two are quite alike. The long 200 × 350 cm pieces are mostly machine-woven and loom-woven, made to a fixed setting in acrylic, polypropylene, viscose and wool blends.
At this size a rug takes two people to move and cannot be washed at home. Vacuum without the beater bar, rotate it twice a year, and send hand-knotted wool to a professional washer — the washing guide covers what to ask for. Browse hand-knotted rugs, wool rugs and machine-woven rugs.
The machine-woven standard is 200 × 350 cm, which is 6'7" × 11'6" and covers exactly 7.00 m². Hand-knotted pieces in the same band are wider and shorter, running from about 219 × 317 cm to 242 × 324 cm.
It depends on the width. A chair needs 50 to 60 cm of rug behind every edge of the table top, so a 200 cm width is marginal for any top wider than 90 cm. A handwoven piece of 230 cm or more carries a table of eight without trouble.
Forty centimeters of width, which changes the arrangement. At 200 cm only the front legs of a seating group reach the pile; at 240 cm the whole group can stand on it, and a dining chair pulled back keeps all four legs on the rug.
A room of about 22 to 28 m². Leave at least 30 cm of bare floor on every side. Take the long 200 × 350 cm shape where the room runs long, and a wide handwoven piece where the room is close to square.
Yes, laid under the bed and running past the foot rather than centered on the room. Start the rug about 40 cm below the head of the bed so the nightstands stand on the floor, and pile then shows at both sides and at the foot.
Because the width of the loom fixes one dimension and the weaver fixes the other over months of work. Warp and weft tension move both. The measured size of each piece is printed on its own product page.
Take 7 in a room that runs long and 8 in a room of 25 to 32 m² where you want every leg of the seating group on the rug. Where the measurement falls between the two, take the larger.
